Through the Valley of Old Men

Following No Country for Old Men, we'll be spending the next 6-8 months in John Steinbeck's East of Eden. After watching a documentary on Steinbeck this morning it's coloring my expectations for the novel. Both novels seem to have a western sensibility to them, and the mind of an aging man looking backwards on his life. I'm curious where their minds will diverge. Following East of Eden I'm hoping to discuss Antigone in our book club, engaging in a 400BC short story on virtue vs morality, where Antigone stands in virtue against the State of Thebes. Then Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse 5, where we'll engage with another aging mans reflection on life who I think arrives at different conclusions. I'm also anxious to find a novel of a female author of the period exercising her visions of reflection. Maybe something by Iris Murdoch?
